Taiwan will not bow to pressure from China and will defend its democratic way of life‘.
‘Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, while China views it as a breakaway province.‘ – define ‘sovereign’ –
sovereignty/ˈsɒvrɪnti/Learn to pronounce noun
- supreme power or authority. “the sovereignty of Parliament” Similar: jurisdiction supremacy dominion power ascendancy suzerainty tyranny hegemony domination sway predominance authority control influence ruler Opposite: subservience subjection
- the authority of a state to govern itself or another state. “national sovereignty” Similar: autonomy independence self-government self-rule home rule self-legislation self-determination non-alignment freedom Opposite: hegemony colonialism
- a self-governing state. plural noun: sovereignties
On my reading of the above definition, Taiwan is indeed a ‘sovereign state’. How long does a ‘breakaway’ state have to be separated before it is deemed officially sovereign? It would appear to be ‘never’ in the eyes of the CCP.
